Marriage boomed during the early war years as couples rushed to seal banns before overseas service brought separation

Lance was a family friend through the war years and participated in many family activities, including holidays at Mansands. He was an only child of older parents and had no siblings. He may have worked at the Town Hall in those days opposite Adyar, strangely enough his father Ben was a butcher and came from a long line of them, he lived in Avenue Road Torquay where Thalia visited as a child
The house was set in the 1900s. The large hallway had Lincrusta on the walls all painted in a deep brown paint/varnish. The original W.C. would have been much sought after nowadays with an enormous seat and ornate chain etc and the rooms had wonderful mirrored fire-surrounds with faded brocade on each of many shelves, and had washstands with basins and ewers too. The cooker was 1930s and the place had an air of not knowing that Mafeking had been relieved !
He was mad on technology & there were loads of radios and bits of them around the house related to his radio ham broadcasts . He came from a long line of butchers his father and uncles were managers of Eastman branches in Torquay and surrounding towns.

Reminiscences from his daughter
