A few momentos from Ian's ditty box from the 1950's
Hammock
Continuation of Ian's experiences
We had to stencil our names on our hammocks in 'pussers' type.Hammocks were on the lower deck in a frigate, a steel box with asbestos lagging and punkah louvre
ventilation. His hammock is every matelots refuge, his own space 7 feet by two feet. In rough weather everyone except the watch keepers turn in , head aft feet forward swaying gently altogether. A wooden stretcher (which you made yourself.) to hold it open at each end, lines pulled tight in light weather and loosened in a storm. A pillow, a biscuit made with canvas stuffed with coir (Mattress),one sheet, blankets folded down over the feet. climb in fold the sheet over, and pull the blankets up to cover the head. Peace privacy and warmth and the blessing of sleep. Show a leg, lash up and stow in the hammock netting..
