Childs from Liskeard

It appears that the Childs families living in Penzance in the 1800's who give their birthplace as Liskeard originated from Dorset and may not be directly related to our Childs family. But as Enoch Childs was a mariner he may have settled in Dorset. We have no records before 1755 when our David Child married Jane Booth on 2.08.1755 in Penzance , we cannot find a birth for him or Jane in any of the Cornish on line records.

Hello, I came across your page whilst googling my Childs ancestors. I have a David Childs whom I believe to have been baptised in 1727 in Axmouth Devon to Joseph Childs and Mary Hurlstone - this family lived in Melbury Osmond, Dorset. A daughter Maria born 1736 was the ancestor of Thomas Hardy, and in memoirs his ancestors are discussed as being from Melbury Osmond, with a brother of Maria moving to Cornwall, a relative being Dr. Borlase Childs, and family of Liskeard. I could assume that the Childs of Liskeard descend from the Melbury Osmond Childs', where they are quite prominent. Hope this is useful information.

I am quite sure the Joseph Childs in Liskeard is the son of Joseph Childs who is the son of Joseph and Mary Childs nee Hurlstone of Melbury Osmond. The online books about Thomas Hardy’s lineage mention the link with the Borlase family. It looks as though brothers Joseph and Christopher both went to Cornwall, their descendants being the Borlase Childs line and the family of Dr. Christopher Childs of Weymouth.
