Butler

AT LAST IN AUGUST 2011 WE HAVE HAD CONTACT FROM THE BUTLER FAMILY
WELCOME TO THE SITE !

silence

On 5th August 1916 Barbara Lena Rothermel (Janice Carrera's paternal grandmother) married Ernest Albert Butler in the Methodist Chapel Shardlow Long Eaton Derbyshire. The Butler family lived in Wellingborough just around the corner to Barbara Lena. A son Ernest Derek was born in 1920 but he has been very difficult to trace. He was known as Derek Butler.
Julius Rothermel 'Watson' was aged seven at the time of the marriage but no mention was ever made by him to his children or family as to where he was and with whom he lived at the time. It is known however that by the age of ten he was a boarder at Wellingborough School.
Ernest Butler was Janice and Alastair's step grandfather who they never knew. There was always a great SILENCE in the family about the Butler connection, equally the secret was kept about Barbara Lena's father being German. The first Rothermel to have settled in the UK from Baden Wurttemberg in the 1870's. Harry Bird was very generous to Barbara Lena when she arrived in Devon with no money just before WW2 by giving her a room free of charge in Esdaile. According to older members of the family Ernest Butler was in India!
This story may very well have been true as the Bengal-Nagpur Railway had very large workshops at Kharagpur and employed 12,000 men, many of the positions were held by the British in all capacities.

DEREK'S GRANDSON HAS CONTACTED THE SITE AND HAS GIVEN US THE FOLLOWING NEWS!

The RAF is the main connecting /core element of this part of the family line. Derek spent most of his life in the RAF.He took a one year sabbatical/retrain in horticulture then returned to the RAF.He met gran at a dance in the Newton Abbott area at the end of the war.He served out in Egypt as an armourer. As the war ended he travelled back up with the RAF through Italy ( picking up a taste for opera along the way). Upon returning to the UK he went to Devon to visit his mum . Its at this point when he went to one of the dances and met my gran. Mary had come over to the UK to be involved in everything that was going on ( at the age of 17) . She had a sister over here in Devon hence the Devonian connection. Once married they travelled around from posting to posting in the UK and Cyprus. They finally settled in Cardiff in the Sixties.
My grandparents moved up to live with my parents in 1994
My grandfather had maintained contact with both of his parents up to their deaths.
